영어로 장애인은? handicapped? disabled person? person with disability?

 

영어로는 장애인을 어떻게 말할까요?

disabled person?

handicapped?

person with disability?

 

일단, 한때 많이 사용되었던 handicapped는 사회에서 장애인이 불이익을 받는다는 부정적 의미를 내포하고 있다고 간주되어 최근에는 잘 쓰지 않는 추세입니다.

그리고 네이버에서 장애인을 검색하면 disabled person으로 검색됩니다.

 

 

참고로, 집합명사인 the disabled라는 표현은 장애인을 다른 특징을 가진 별도의 집단으로 차별하는 표현이 될 수 있어서 잘 쓰지 않는다고 합니다.

 

그래서 영어권에서는 disabled person과 person with disability를 사용하고 있는 것으로 보입니다.

우리말로 번역하면 둘다 똑같은 장애인이긴 합니다만...어디에 더 집중하느냐의 차이인 듯 하죠?

 

최근에는 장애인도 한 인간이고 우리사회의 한 구성원이기 때문에 장애보다는 '사람'임을 더 강조하는 사람우선 언어인  person wiith disability, persons of disabilities를 더 많이 사용하고 있는 것으로 보입니다.

 

하지만, 장애가 '나'의 장애이고, '나'의 일부라고 생각하며 장애를 자신의 정체성과 통합되게 느끼는 사람들은 disabled person을 사용하기도 합니다. 이 경우 person with disability가 오히려 장애에 대해 부정적인 관점을 가지고 있어서 사람을 강조한다고 보는 입장입니다.

 

관련해서 세계보건기구(WHO)에서는 장애인권리협약에 의해 persons with disabilities만 사용한다고 합니다. 단, WHO문서에서는 people with disability 를 사용하고 있다고 하네요.

장애인도 보통의 사람이고, 우리 사회의 한 구성원임을 잊지 마시기 바랍니다.
